Call Me Autumn’s Child
September 16, 2008It was that morning. I walked outside and felt the crispness in the air and the smell of fall. It is an indescribable feeling, but you just know autumn is around the corner. It was that morning for me today. I wait all year for this day.
Autumn, to me, is an incredibly invigorating time. I love the cooler days and the change in landscape. After so many years in Florida and Texas, I now live back in an area where we get to see the colors of the leaves change. I grew up in Wisconsin and there was nothing more beautiful to me than looking out over the rolling bluffs and seeing the bright scarlet leaves of the maples and the golden yellow of the birches peeking boldly out from the deep green of the fir trees.
I must be an autumn’s child because I love pulling out the winter wardrobe and wrapping myself in the cozy warmth of sweaters. Hot tea and a good book by the fireplace is my favorite form of relaxation. The days get shorter and the nights longer. It makes me appreciate the light and coziness of my home.
Autumn’s colors are amazing. I’m drawn to the deep auburns and brilliant scarlets. The yellows, golds, orange, plum, and forest greens are breathtaking both in nature and in manmade clothing. In a world that could have been made in black and white, I’m grateful that God chose color. He’s given us a precious gift in the rich hues of fall.
It is also a time that signals winter is ahead. It means that soon we will celebrate my husband, mom, and dad’s birthdays, Thanksgiving, and the most wonderful time of the year, Christmas. I have so many good memories of the fall and winter holidays.
The scents of autumn are as wonderfully rich as the colors. Pumpkin, cinnamon, cocoa, apple, nutmeg and vanilla are all aromas I associate with fall. Nothing smells better than a pumpkin pie in the oven and hot, bubbling beef stew on the stove.
Today is the day. Autumn is here.
For now,
Call Me Autumn’s Child

Ahhhhh…there’s nothing better than hot tea, a good book and a comfy blanket. I love Autumn too!
Me too, me too, me too!!!!!!
How can I describe the first time I ever saw trees in their autumn regalia? It was magical…
My wife and I were on our honeymoon – my first trip by air, ever. Besides the man-made beauty of the parks at Disney World, we were treated to the much grader show of color from nature. That decade, I fell in love twice – first with she who became my wife, then with autumn in Florida. The turning of the leaves was and will ever be special for us.
