Call Me a Believer in Chiropractic Care

Everyone who goes to a chiropractor has “their story.” This is what my chiropractor told me on my first visit. I was skeptical. Sure, I thought, I’m giving this a shot so don’t expect me to sing chiro-care praises yet. I’m just not that kind of person.

Well guess what? I left the office with “my story.”

My mom has been urging me to find a chiropractor for a while now. But I was never in a position to go. I always had an excuse: too busy, costs too much, blah, blah… I should have listened to her! She’s a very wise woman. She’s also had a lot of success with natural solutions and I was a bit envious. But I’d been blinded by the propaganda that there is something wrong with me that only pills could fix.

Several years ago I woke up one morning to find I couldn’t move my neck. That and a massive migraine sent me running to the doctor’s office for cortisone shots, muscle relaxants, and painkillers. I felt better in a few days but never regained much range of motion in my neck. And migraines were a constant in my life. I got used to having them. Fast forward to January of this year. I woke up with the same issue. The only difference was that I wanted to find a cure, not just a “band-aid” for the problem. I had spent the last 6 months working hard on losing weight, eating healthier, and getting more exercise. I didn’t want to flush all that by loading up on meds that would break down my immune system, send me into terrible mood swings, and make me sick to my stomach. So I started looking online at the chiropractors in my area. As with most anything, desperation is a driving force.

One of the websites I looked at grabbed my attention. The doctor was all about total body wellness. She spoke of nutrition, exercise, and of course, the benefits to regular chiropractic care. She seemed very passionate about her work and offered a lot of resources on her website. The clincher for me was the fact they were less than a mile from my home and had an appointment request button right on the website homepage. (I’m all about using the internet…I’m terrible on the phone.) So I sent a message and within 20 minutes, I not only heard back from the office but also had my appointment booked for the very next day.

I walked into the well decorated office and was warmly welcomed. I didn’t have to wait. The assistant ushered me in and gave me some paperwork to fill out. I had x-rays done, a nerve test, and was given a very clear explanation of chiropractic care. The doctor was very passionate and answered every question I could think up. She was engaging and clear and I could not wait to get started. Since x-rays weren’t developed right away, she gave me just enough of an adjustment to alleviate the pain in my neck. I left feeling a little bit better physically and a lot better mentally. I was excited!

The next appointment was my eye opener. The x-rays came back and the doctor went over them in detail showing me how my spine was out of alignment and correctly assessed all the health issues I had just based on what she saw. I came in for the muscle spasm in my neck but she explained how chiropractic care could help heal my body of the headaches, high blood pressure, sinus issues, and even infertility. However, as eager as I was to get started, I was still a little skeptical. It all sounded too good to be true.

She warned me that this would be a slow process and I might see small steps in healing but it was a “big picture” solution. I was ready and willing to take it slow.

What I wasn’t prepared for was the instant success. The very first adjustment not only relieved my neck of pain, but cleared my clogged sinuses! I had learned to live with the constant post-nasal drip, frequent head colds, etc. I didn’t remember what it was like to breathe freely through both nostrils- at the same time! The doctor was pleased that I was excited, but warned me that not everything was going to happen that quickly. And I was experiencing a “results not typical” moment…most people’s chiropractic miracles happen over time.

Subsequent visits were equally miraculous to me. I started seeing some great changes. Range of motion on my neck has never been better. I sleep through the night soundly…no more insomnia! Headaches are rare- and I usually know why I have one immediately if I do get one (not drinking enough water.) My lower back is progressively loosening up and pain is easing. I have more energy and more of a drive to eat healthier. And my blood pressure is almost low enough to get off medication.

If this is what it takes to get healthy, then keep me signed up!

For now…and always,

Call me a true believer in chiropractic care!
